Back then, the goal was simple: help laboratories and distributors move frames and lenses quickly, safely, efficiently and reliably across the city.
As the sector grew and evolved, so did we.
Our fleet and systems became more sophisticated and our delivery network expanded. Our experience and knowledge deepened with every journey and we continued to build lasting, genuine relationships in the industry.
Over the decades, Harts Couriers has built lasting partnerships with laboratories, manufacturers and independent practices, many of whom have trusted and depended on us from the start. We’ve earned that trust by doing what we say we’ll do, every day: delivering on time, communicating clearly, and treating every parcel as if it’s our own.
Today, Harts Couriers remains family-led and proudly independent. As a team and a company, we embody the same values that have shaped the business from the start; and the personal service and attention to detail that defined us from the start is still what makes us stand out today.
Our timeline:
1980s
Harts Couriers is founded by Tom Hart, who sees a smarter way to run things.
Back then, every optical supplier ran their own vans and delivery routes. Tom understood that this was time-consuming and costly.
By bringing everything together under one trusted roof, the industry gained a faster, more efficient way to get optical products where they needed to be.
Early 1990s
Harts Couriers was acquired by Alex Mueller, who had a background in optical sales.
Servicing the whole of Sydney, the company grew from one delivery run a day to two.
1994
Harts Couriers merged with a competitor service, Superior Optical Services, which Harts Couriers eventually bought out entirely.
2000s
The Mueller family formed National Optical Distribution, Australia’s leading optical logistics company, with the Materazzo family, who own Optical Courier Services (OCS) in Melbourne.
Today
Harts Couriers is 100% owned by the Mueller family, who also own 50% of National Optical Distribution.
Still operating as a customer-focused, family business, Harts Couriers’ senior leadership team is made up of several generations of the Mueller family. Harts Couriers’ is a modern, forward-thinking company that retains its family values and personal service.
Decades on, the mission remains the same: to deliver certainty and trust with every journey.
