Returns are part of the daily rhythm of any logistics company. In optical in particular, adjustments, remakes and exchanges are not the exception; they are simply part of how the sector works. This is why we’ve always treated returns as part of normal, everyday service at Harts, rather than an add-on, and that’s why we don’t charge extra for them.
At Harts, this is less about generosity and more about clarity. It’s an approach that emerged from understanding how practices and laboratories actually operate: movement is rarely linear; and items travel back and forth simply as part of quality control, refinement and patient care. A frame may need adjusting; a lens may require remaking; an exchange may simply be the most practical solution. These are routine realities, not unusual disruptions.
Our view is straightforward: if we’re responsible for moving items between laboratories and practices, we should support the full cycle of that movement. Keeping this free eliminates conditional policies based on volume on frequency which, in turn, helps to keep the process consistent. Approached in this way, everybody wins.
It also reflects a broader operating principle at Harts. We prefer straightforward models with clear expectations and fewer variables. We find that your days (and ours) tend to run more smoothly by doing things in this way.
In a busy practice or laboratory, predictability is valuable. When collections and returns follow the same pattern, week in and week out, they become part of the background of the working day, helping to create part of the rhythm of business moving forward and quality and consistency being maintained. They’re simply part of the normal flow.
For our drivers and operations team, this consistency matters too. Routes are built with the understanding that movement is cyclical. Vehicles are loaded and scheduled with that flow in mind and returns are treated as part of the normal pattern of collections and deliveries each day. Over time, this shared understanding has created a smoother exchange between our team, our customers’ teams, and the people they rely on us to help them serve. Free returns are about alignment. They reflect an acknowledgement of how work is actually carried out and how businesses are run. It’s as simple as that.
Like any business, as we grow and evolve over time, so will some aspects of what we do. Technology, fleet composition and internal systems, are rightly and necessarily all subject to potential development. The fundamentals of what we do, however, including our commitment to free returns, are tied to the ways in which we keep the service steady and consistent through that evolution. It’s an integral part of how we keep businesses moving and, as far as we’re concerned, it’s here to stay.
